Each summer, my friends and neighbors organize a popular free event in Eugene called the Whiteaker Block Party. The event began in 2006, in the Ninkasi parking lot. Since then it has matured into a celebration of art, music and self expression that grooves up and down most of the neighborhood. I was asked to work on the website (http://whiteakerblockparty.com/). The project turned into an entire campaign involving advertisements, t-shirts, social networks and finally climaxed with my illustrations gracing the cover of the Eugene Weekly. The Block Party map and music lineup was also featured on two pages in the middle of the Eugene Weekly. I decided to make the two spread advertisement work as another poster and placed the art on a 90 degree angle. The insert was removed and used as a poster and/or map. The Weekly was given out at the information booth during the event for the map section. A simpler poster, without the map, was duplicated to promote the event a week before the party. I’m proud that my friends and neighbors have dedicated weeks of their free time to make this local, free event happen.
